Foster The People: Pumped Up Kicks

The series Fashion’d was created just for ‘kicks’ and as a reminder to myself not to take things…like fashion so seriously. I’m lovin the ’sing-a-long’ beat of this song.

Simply Red: Sunrise

This smooth and easy beat was all the comfort required while working on the Fashion’d series.

From the Art Series: Bleeding, Oil on Canvas (2011)

In Flower Essence Therapy the essential oils and the essence of the flower are used as a healing counterpoint. It is this relationship between the vibrations of their unique trait, personality or character with the human body that interests me. The idea of bleeding to heal is the inspiration for this series. I relate this concept to relationships in which individuals have given what they hold dear or value most, to others in hopes to heal the object of their affection. Unfortunately much like in plant therapy, without the right balance of vibrations and harmony with the soul, healing will not take place.

This series is about Concealed Pain and Suffering, in an attempt to conceal everything I have revealed everything.

From the Art Series: Masked, Oil on Canvas (2011).

Inspired by the poem, We Wear the Mask. A Poem by Paul Laurence Dunbar (1872-1906).

This series is about concealed pain and suffering, in an attempt to conceal everything I have revealed everything.

This poem has inspired me to illustrate my own collection of mask(ed)-metaphors.

We wear the mask that grins and lies,
It hides our cheeks and shades our eyes,—
This debt we pay to human guile;
With torn and bleeding hearts we smile,
And mouth with myriad subtleties.

Why should the world be over-wise,
In counting all our tears and sighs?
Nay, let them only see us, while
We wear the mask.

We smile, but, O great Christ, our cries
To thee from tortured souls arise.
We sing, but oh the clay is vile
Beneath our feet, and long the mile;
But let the world dream otherwise,
We wear the mask!

Caribou – Odessa

Leap and the net will appear… I have always wondered what would happen if I just let myself go and paint from a place of absolute abandon – each time I listen to this track I find myself getting closer to that ledge!

Duff MacDonald – English Bay

Duff MacDonald is on my painting list because his music is the direct route to a time when life was simple – I’m reminded to keep going, not give up and believe.

Adele – Rolling in the deep

When Adelle wails, “We could have had it all…rolling in the deep,” I feel every ounce of pain and loss with her. For me it’s not about licking wounds but in identifying with the pain, and refocusing the energy that can be quite powerful and devastating. I strive to paint pictures that make one stare self-consciously at oneself – as I do when I’m rolling in the deep.

From Art Series: Consumed, resin and mixed media on wood panel (2011)

Consumed is a subject very near and not so dear to my heart. In fact it concerns me a great deal that I am ‘consumed’ by consumerism. I have a weakness for a slick stylized marketing campaign and the must-have product attached to it. If that was the sum of my affliction I might not be so concerned about this obsession. However it goes a little deeper than that. This series is about the internal struggle.

I long for and desperately search for simplicity that rejecting consumerism could provide – however I’m consumed by the seduction, attention, anticipation, the curiosity, resignation, the push, the rush, and the leisure associated with consumerism – the result of our ever-accelerating lifestyle.

In creating the series I wanted to create a feeling of a ‘packaged’ good. The artwork and subsequent message had to be contained in a slick and seductive clear coating to hold the consumer’s attention long enough to deliver the message. I further explored this idea by adding a foil ribbon to create a shrink-wrapped look and feel. This series is far from complete. I plan on further exploring and studying the subject and how it relates to my experiences; you could say I’m too consumed to let it go.
